For the redevelopment of Wembley Stadium, architects Foster & Partners/HOK Sport designed a partially retractable roof, suspended from a giant arch. The structural system for the roof, engineered by Mott Stadium Consortium, is in the form of an assymetrical cable net.

The most noticeable feature of the design is the 133m high arch which performs a key role in supporting the roof. The entire weight of the North roof and 60% of the weight of the South roof is transferred to the arch using Bridon cables. The cables vary in size up to 145mm in diameter with each of the largest cables having a breaking load of over 2,000 tonnes.
